The vagus nerve

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

What is the vagus nerve?

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body which connects the brain to vital organs like the heart, gut and lungs. It plays a vital role in the parasympathetic nervous system which controls bodily functions including heart rate, digestion and breath control. Due to the Vagus’ nerves innate ability to control the physical body, it can play a big role in affecting a person's mental health and state of mind.

Can we stimulate the Vagus Nerve and what are the benefits?

Stimulation of the vagus nerve sends neural signals to your body, encouraging it to relax and clear any stress or anxiety you may be experiencing. By manipulating a person's “vagal tone” (this can be performed with deep, slow, controlled belly breathing), participants may overcome or significantly improve the feelings of anxiety, depression, stress and panic. With consistent practice, participants may feel long term benefits in mood, and wellbeing whilst allowing more controlled management of foreign or uncomfortable environments and feelings.
